Walking Courses

Our Walk with a Doc program is in our local cemetery, Oakdale, in the heart of downtown. This provides our guests with a variety of walking options. We can offer both slow-paced and fast-paced walking programs to accommodate all fitness levels. For those who may need to sit or rest, we also have designated “Tombstone” seated areas. This will ensure everyone can participate comfortably.

Book Club

“What’s really exciting is that we’ve partnered with the cemetery to highlight curated tombstone tours during our walks. Each month, we’ll feature historic markers, some dating back to 1882, which ties directly into our monthly Book Club discussions. Participants can enjoy the walk while learning about the fascinating stories behind these tombstones, connecting our local history for a fun and engaging community event,” states Dr. Pulapaka.

Take a step toward better health!

“There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including peripheral vascular disease, coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer, and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Pulapaka. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide the following benefits:

  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Help maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well-being
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis

DeLand joins a growing list of communities worldwide that have started local Walk with a Doc (WWAD) programs. WWAD was started by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, OH.  He has walked with patients and community members nearly every weekend since 2005.
